At the start of the century, John Hertz, founder of the Yellow Cab Company in 1915 in Chicago, painted his fleet of taxis and rentals - then his trucks - bright yellow, as per a study by the University of Chicago which showed that yellow is the easiest colour to pick out from afar. © Emmanuel Dunand / AFP
