Merapi is an explosive stratovolcano known for its "intense avalanche clouds" and likely the most dangerous volcano from among the 130 that punctuate the Indonesian archipelago. It has taken the lives of more than 1500 people over the course of the last century. In 2010, its lava flows ravaged several villages.
